Solar Panel

A solar panel converts sunlight into electricity by using photovoltaic (PV) cells.

It has the optimal power output when facing the sun perpendicularly.  In Canada, it's the best to install solar panels facing south, tilted at 30 to 60 degree.

Types of Solar Panels

Solar panels come in different sizes and power rating.  The power from a solar panel is proportional to  its area.  We have solar panels ranging from 35W to 400W.

There are rigid and flexible solar panels.

- The rigid panels have an aluminum frame that provides support and a glass that protects the PV cells.  It's durable and typical life expectance is more than 25 years.

- Flexible solar panels:  Flexible and light weight.  Can be installed in a curved surface.  Typical life expectance is 5 years.

Solar Energy from Solar Panel

The EnergyHub shows that 1kw of solar panels installed can generate about 4kwh of energy per summer day and much less in a winter day.   For a household  average usage of 30kwh/day, it will need need  more than 8kw (20 pcs of 400W panels) of solar panels to be self sufficient.  However, a cottage that uses less than 10kwh a day can be powered by around 3kw (8 pcs) of solar panels.

Solar energy is a renewable and clean source of energy.
